She had green eyes, and auburn hair,
In the style of the time she was nineteen then and I, just a child, looking on.
She met a man with a mean streak a mile wide,
Who charmed, beguiled her, pulled her from our side,
This child’s love not enough, but God I tried,
He was a German soldier, and SS man,
After years of fear she you took your life in your own hands,
I’ll never know why, or understand.
If I could choose to be, like anybody, I’d choose to be like you.
I have strangers for ancestors,
I have nameless great grandchildren,
Of all of those I with I could know you.
So I write this song from a mountain town,
Through the eyes of my grandmother who’s not around,
I hope I don’t offend you, or let you down.
But you always said that she looked like me,
Couldn’t tell our pictures apart when we were seventeen,
Living up to a ghost can weigh heavy.
If I could choose to be, like anybody, I’d choose to be like you.
I have strangers for ancestors,
I have nameless great grandchildren,
Of all of those I with I could know you.
She had green eyes, and auburn hair.

The Songwriter

They call me a songwriter everywhere I go,
They know my songs and they’ve been to my shows,
But they don’t know that I have no more notes
Collecting dust in the corner is my old guitar
Three feet away from me yet still much too far
For me to go to find those notes
It’s hard enough, finding time
Then to push words together when those words don’t want to rhyme
Oh and time, oh time is ticking by
Time oh time is ticking by
Others use the same words hundreds of time,
Yet coming from me, it just don’t feel right
Oh why oh why can’t I
Why oh why can’t I
Songs come easy, songs come hard,
Unlike lovers they don’t leave us, but they can still tear us apart
This from me to you, is a start
From me to you is a start
I got twelve notes to play with,
and all these combinations you'll have heard,
sometimes I don't see sense in trying to write a new one,
so i'll stick to what I know works
It’s hard enough, finding time
Then to push words together when those words don’t want to rhyme
And it’s hard enough, to tow the line,
With working and sleeping and daily life
Oh and time, oh time is ticking by
Time oh time is ticking by

I have a friend,
We haven’t spoken in years, years I have spent growing old
Growing old
Much has changed, since those lazy days of our youth,
Oh in truth, I miss you
I miss you
And the winter light,
it takes me straight back
With it’s changing skies,
that don’t let me forget,
And it’s icy wind,
that’s biting my cheek,
The nights draw in year after year,
And I feel as though somehow you’re near
But I can’t forget,
no I can’t forget
Don’t want to forget,
The year we lost you
I have a friend, we haven't spoken in years,
years I have spent, growing old.

Tripping round the city,
Whisky vision, ditties played by sullen men
You dress me in your scarf,
Territory marked, but I’m not yours to have
Not yours to have
No I’m not yours and you’re not mine
We kid ourselves, enjoy the lie,
Paint for peace on borrowed time,
And that night the spell was broken, under the full moons light.
Arthur in his seat but,
We won’t go to meet him, my legs tire
My legs they tire
We shelter from the rain drops,
Cos your boots they lace up, but they have no grip,
We have no grip
No I’m not yours and you’re not mine
We kid ourselves, enjoy the lie,
We paint for peace on borrowed time,
And at night we walk home heartbroken, under the full moons light.
Your kiss explosive,
How was I supposed to know this
I thought that it would break the tension
I never thought it would create this tension
I miss you
No I’m not yours and you’re not mine
We fool around, enjoy the lie,
We paint for peace on borrowed time,
And at night we walk home heartbroken,
that night we went home heartbroken
that night, our spell was broken,
under the full moons light.
That special blue sky
The full moons light
That special blue sky

Rhiannon Scutt Sheffield, UK
Evolution through Rhiannon’s music is clear. A shift from her first rootsy duo Rita Payne, through a period of introspective work developing as a lyricist. Now working with a grittier sound, she maintains her beautiful and at times uncomfortable lyrics, experimenting with world-class musicians, who's combined sound converge where distorted guitars, live strings meet drum machines and jazz trumpet. ... more
